Buying guide: the best lawn mower tires for zero turn

Front casters vs drive tires

Four of these are 11×4.00-5 front caster tires with smooth tread: the MARASTAR, GICOOL, TEPU and MAXROLLORS. Smooth tread is the front-caster standard because it turns without chewing turf. The Lucky Seven 18×8.50-8 is the outlier: a drive-wheel-size turf tire with a P332 tread pattern, 4 mm tread depth and a stated 815 lb max load. Buy the size your mower calls for: front casters take the 11×4.00-5, drive wheels take the larger size, and the listings here only cover those two.

Flat-free vs tubeless

The MARASTAR, GICOOL and TEPU are flat-free solid tires: MARASTAR lists polyurethane, GICOOL lists premium PU foam with no inner tube, and TEPU lists solid polyurethane foam. Flat-free means no flats and no air checks, at the cost of a firmer ride. The MAXROLLORS and Lucky Seven are tubeless: the MAXROLLORS is a 4-ply smooth turf tire at 325 lb and 46 PSI, and the Lucky Seven is a 4-ply tubeless turf tire with a P332 tread. Tubeless tires ride softer but can still puncture.

Load rating and PSI

Stated loads run 250 lb (MARASTAR) to 815 lb (Lucky Seven), with the GICOOL at 330 lb, the MAXROLLORS at 325 lb at 46 PSI and the TEPU at 350 lb. The Lucky Seven states its 815 lb at 22 PSI and a DOT R3 rating. Match the rating to the corner of the mower the tire carries, and never run a tire past its stated pressure: 46 PSI on the MAXROLLORS, 22 PSI on the Lucky Seven.

Tire-only vs wheel assemblies

The MARASTAR, GICOOL and TEPU ship as tire-and-wheel assemblies, ready to bolt on with the included bushings, bearings and spacers. The MAXROLLORS states tire only, wheel not included, and the Lucky Seven states rims not included. If your old wheels are sound, tire-only is the cheaper fix; if the wheels are bent or the bushings are shot, the assemblies save a second purchase.

Adapters and fit

Zero-turn front axles are not one size. The MARASTAR ships a universal adapter kit for 5/8 in axles and hub lengths of 3.4 to 5 in, with 3/4 in contractor-grade oil-infused bushings installed. The GICOOL adapts 3/4, 5/8 and 1/2 in axle bores with centered hub lengths from 3.4 to 7.5 in. The TEPU fits 3/4, 5/8 and 1/2 in bearings with a 3.4 to 5.8 in center hub. Check your axle diameter, hub length and the existing sidewall size before ordering: the listings all say to measure first.

Static loads and flat spots

The GICOOL and TEPU listings both warn that their solid tires are not for long static loads: sitting loaded in one spot can create flat spots that make the mower bump. They are also not for highway use, and the MAXROLLORS notes its NHS-series tire is not for high-speed service. Park the mower unloaded or on stands for winter storage if the manual allows it.

Mowing safety

Read the manual, keep children and pets out of the yard while you work, wear eye and hearing protection and sturdy footwear, and never exceed the slope rating of your machine. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC lawn mower safety. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

The Acre Score explained

The Acre Score weighs performance, build, value, safety and warranty from the listings only. No listing here states a safety certification in a form the score can use, so safety scores zero across the board. The Lucky Seven leads on its 815 lb stated load and 2-year warranty; the GICOOL follows on 330 lb with the same warranty term.

Product Acre Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
Lucky Seven 18×8.50-8 9.7 29 21 21 n/a 3
GICOOL 11×4.00-5 2-Pack 9.6 28 20 20 n/a 3
TEPU 11×4.00-5 2-Pack 9.6 28 20 20 n/a 2
MARASTAR 11×4.00-5 2-Pack 9.5 27 19 20 n/a 2
MAXROLLORS 11×4.00-5 2-Pack 9.5 27 19 19 n/a 2

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Safety counts only for powered gear or where the listing states safety features; where it does not apply, the score is taken over the remaining 90 points.

FAQ: mowing large lots

What size tires does my zero turn take?

Check the existing sidewall: the front casters here are 11×4.00-5 and the drive-size example is 18×8.50-8. The listings all say to measure the axle, hub and sidewall before ordering.

Are flat-free tires good for zero turns?

For front casters, yes: the MARASTAR, GICOOL and TEPU are flat-free solids with smooth tread for easy turning. They are not for highway use, and two listings warn against long static loads that can flat-spot them.

Can I use these on the drive wheels?

Only the Lucky Seven 18×8.50-8 is a drive-wheel-size tire here, with an 815 lb stated load and P332 tread. The four 11×4.00-5 tires are front caster tires.

Do these come with wheels?

Three do: the MARASTAR, GICOOL and TEPU are tire-and-wheel assemblies. The MAXROLLORS and Lucky Seven are tire only, with rims not included.

Which has the longest warranty?

The Lucky Seven states 2 years and the GICOOL states 2 Year Manufacturer. The TEPU, MARASTAR and MAXROLLORS each state a 1-year term.
