Sizing up garden tractors

Garden tractors are built heavier than lawn tractors, with a stronger frame and a bigger pull. They earn their keep when you tow, haul and till more than you mow. Most are sold through dealers, which helps with service but limits what appears on retail listings. Where the maker leaves a figure out, we show Not stated and do not infer a rating from similar models.

Frame and axle
A thicker frame and a cast front axle usually mean a longer working life. The listing may state the steel gauge or leave it out.
Weight
Heft helps traction on slopes with a load behind. It also asks for a trailer and a ramp that can carry it.
Hitch and drawbar
Check the hitch style against your implements. Hitch types differ, so match the pin and the plate to the attachment.
Power takeoff
Some models list a PTO or front lift. Those suit loaders, tillers and blades, so look at what the listing says is compatible.
Tires
Lug tires grip but can tear turf. Turf tires protect lawns and slip more when loaded.
