Sizing up electric zero-turn mowers

An electric zero-turn pairs a tight turning circle with a battery pack, so both sets of specs matter. These are the entries we read first. This is a young segment, so listings vary a lot in how much they state. Where a figure such as rated area is missing, we say so, and we ask you to read the manual for any slope limit.

Battery capacity
Voltage and amp-hours set the energy, and the listing may state rated acres. Terrain and grass height change the real result.
Deck width
Wider decks mean fewer passes but a heavier machine. Check whether the pack can feed the larger deck.
Charge time
Look at charger output and the stated time to recharge. A second pack is worth considering for bigger jobs.
Weight and slope
Packs add weight, which helps grip. The slope rating in the manual is the one to follow.
Safety features
Blade brake, seat switch and a UL, ETL or CSA mark all count. When the listing publishes none, that part scores zero.
