A small lot under an acre still drops a full fall of leaves, and they all land in the beds, along the fence and under the shrubs where a wide rake cannot go. The best leaf rake for small yards is a narrow-headed rake that works between plants, with a handle long enough to reach under bushes without bending double. These five are compared by stated head width, tine count, handle reach and warranty.

Buying guide: the best leaf rake for small yards

Head width for tight spaces

Four of these have narrow heads between 8.5 and 9-1/5 in, made for beds, fence lines and under shrubs. The Yocada is the exception at 19.3 in wide with 25 tines: it clears open lawn fast but will not fit between plants. On a small lot the narrow heads do most of the work, because the leaves collect where the mower and the wide rake cannot reach. For pine needles specifically, see our best leaf rake for pine needles list.

Handle reach without bending

Handles here run from 35 in at the most compact setting to 74 in at the longest. The Bird Twig reaches 74 in, the WORKPRO 72 in through four telescopic sections, the GSBLUNIE 70 in, the Yocada 68.9 in and the Feblomst 65 in. Longer reach means less bending along shrub lines; the telescoping handles also shorten down for close work in beds. Detachable handles on the Bird Twig, Feblomst and WORKPRO break down for trunk or shed storage.

Tines and clogging

Tine counts here are 11 on three picks and 25 on the Yocada; the Bird Twig states 0.271 in wide solid tines without a count. The Feblomst and WORKPRO listings both say their 11 close-spaced tines collect leaves without clogging between them. Wider tines move mulch and sticks; closer tines hold leaves. None of this replaces a mower with a bagger for the open lawn, but for beds and edges the rake is the tool.

Warranty on a hand tool

Only the GSBLUNIE states a warranty term: 180 days. The other four state no warranty term, which is common for simple steel tools. A stated term covers bent tines and failed joints in the first season; without one, the anti-rust coating and the steel gauge are what you are buying. All five list coated or stainless steel against rust.

Mowing safety

Read the manual, keep children and pets out of the yard while you work, wear eye and hearing protection and sturdy footwear, and never exceed the slope rating of your machine. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC lawn mower safety. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Matching It to Your Property

  • Beds and shrubs on a small lot: the 8.5 to 9-1/5 in heads thread between plants where wide rakes cannot go.
  • Open lawn with heavy leaf fall: the 19.3 in Yocada with 25 tines clears the open ground quickest.
  • Tight storage: the detachable handles on the Bird Twig, Feblomst and WORKPRO break down for the shed or trunk.
  • Wet fall weather: all five list rust-resistant coatings or stainless steel; hang the rake up instead of leaving it on the ground.

The Acre Score explained

The Acre Score weighs performance (stated head width, tines and reach for small-yard work), build (materials and coatings), value, safety and warranty. No listing here states a safety certification, so every pick scores zero on safety, and only one states a warranty term. How we pick explains the weights.

Product Acre Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
GSBLUNIE 8.5 in Leaf Rake 9.6 30 20 20 n/a 2
Bird Twig 8.5 in Rake 9.6 30 21 20 n/a 0
WORKPRO 9-1/5 in Leaf Rake 9.6 30 21 20 n/a 0
Yocada 19.3 in Leaf Rake 9.6 32 20 20 n/a 0
Feblomst 9 in Leaf Rake 9.6 29 20 20 n/a 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Safety counts only for powered gear or where the listing states safety features; where it does not apply, the score is taken over the remaining 90 points.

FAQ: mowing large lots

What size rake head is best for a small yard?

8.5 to 9-1/5 in for beds and tight spots, which is what four of these five offer. The 19.3 in Yocada suits the open lawn portions of the same yard.

Do I need a long handle?

It helps along fences and under shrubs. These handles reach 65 to 74 in at full extension, and the telescoping ones shorten for close work.

Will these rakes damage the lawn?

The GSBLUNIE and WORKPRO listings state their tines clean without damaging lawns or plant roots. The Yocada listing warns it is not meant for cement or heavy-duty debris.

Which of these states a warranty?

Only the GSBLUNIE, with a 180-day warranty. The other four state no warranty term.
