Commercial-style zero-turns put a welded deck and a bigger engine on a 54 to 61 inch cut, which matters when you mow 5 to 10 acres every week, or mow for others. These four gas models all have V-twin engines, and three of the four listings state a fabricated deck, and we say plainly what each listing leaves out, including the slope ratings and warranty terms that most of them skip.

Buying guide: choosing a commercial-style zero-turn

What commercial means on a listing

There is no single standard. The MZ61 listing calls its Hydro Gear ZT-3100 transmission commercial grade, and the Xcite listings give fabricated steel decks. Treat the word as a prompt to check the deck build, transmission and warranty, not as proof of duty rating.

Deck width and mowing time

With the Mowing Time Calculator formula (acres per hour = mph x 5280 x deck in feet x 0.9 x 0.8 / 43560) at its commercial speed of 8 mph, a 60 in deck covers about 3.5 acres an hour, so five open acres take about 86 minutes, and a 54 in deck about 3.1 acres an hour, about 95 minutes. Many obstacles add roughly 45%.

Fabricated deck

Three of the four listings state a 3-blade fabricated steel deck. The Ariens Zenith listing does not give a deck build, so confirm it on the maker’s page.

Engine brand and displacement

The listings state a Kawasaki 726cc V-twin (MZ61, Zenith 60 at 23.5 HP), a Kohler 747cc V-twin on the Z375 and a Kohler 7000 Pro series V-twin on the Z350. Compare the displacement and HP, and check the engine warranty separately from the mower.

Fuel tank and range

Only the MZ61 states a fuel capacity, 5 gallons. A larger tank means fewer stops on a ten acre day.

Seat and comfort for long sessions

None of the four listings details the seat or suspension. For two-hour sessions, look at photos and ask about a suspension seat option.

Slopes

No listing states a slope rating. Read the owner’s manual and use the Slope Calculator to compare your hill with it.

Zero-turn safety

Zero-turns steer and brake through the rear wheels, so they can lose traction on slopes, wet grass and near ponds, ditches and drop-offs. Stay within the slope rating in your manual, keep well back from water and edges, use the ROPS and seat belt, never carry passengers, keep children and pets out of the yard, and disengage the blades before reversing. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC riding lawnmower safety. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

The Acre Score explained

The Acre Score weighs five factors: performance (deck width and engine), build quality (deck and transmission), value (specs for the money), safety (ROPS, slope rating and operator controls) and warranty (years and coverage). A factor the listing does not state scores zero. Only the MZ61 listing mentions ROPS and a warranty term, which is the main reason it scores highest.

Product Acre Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
Husqvarna MZ61 9.7 34 24 19 4 3
Husqvarna Xcite Z375 9.5 34 22 19 0 0
Husqvarna Xcite Z350 9.5 33 22 20 0 0
Ariens Zenith 60 9.5 33 21 19 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

FAQ: mowing large lots

Do I need a commercial zero-turn for 5 acres?

Not necessarily. A residential zero-turn with a fabricated 54 in deck can mow 5 acres, and a commercial-style model matters more for heavy weekly use, mowing for others or rough ground.

What makes a zero-turn commercial grade?

There is no common standard on listings. Look for a fabricated deck, a named commercial transmission, a larger engine and a longer warranty, and verify each on the maker’s page.

How long does a 60 inch zero-turn take to mow 5 acres?

About 86 minutes of mowing on open ground at 8 mph by our calculator’s formula, and about 45% more with many trees and beds.

Does a commercial zero-turn have ROPS?

Only the MZ61 listing mentions ROPS. For the other three, check whether a roll bar is included or offered as an option before you buy.
