Two acres is where a zero-turn starts paying for itself: a 42 to 54 inch deck at 6 mph covers an open two acres in roughly an hour or less. These three picks are one battery 42 inch model and two gas models, and for each we give the deck, engine or battery, speed and warranty from the listing, and say what the listing leaves out.

Buying guide: choosing a zero-turn for 2 acres

Deck width vs mowing time on 2 acres

The Mowing Time Calculator uses acres per hour = mph x 5280 x (deck in feet) x 0.9 x 0.8 / 43560, which allows 10% overlap and 80% field efficiency. At the calculator’s residential zero-turn speed of 6 mph, a 42 in deck covers about 1.83 acres an hour, so two open acres take about 65 minutes. A 48 in deck does about 2.1 acres an hour (about 57 minutes) and a 54 in deck about 2.36 acres an hour (about 51 minutes). Trees and beds add time: multiply by 1.2 for some obstacles and 1.45 for many.

Fabricated vs stamped deck

Only the Husqvarna Z242F listing states its deck build: a fabricated (welded) 42 in deck. A fabricated deck is generally built from thicker welded steel than a stamped one, so it is worth asking about when a listing says nothing. The other two listings do not state a deck build, so check the manual or the maker’s page before you buy.

Transmission

The Z242F listing names a Hydro-Gear EZT transmission, and the Z254F listing calls its transmission hydrostatic and no-maintenance. The EGO listing does not name a transmission, only three driving modes (Control, Standard and Sport) and a top speed of 8 mph.

Zero-turn on slopes

A zero-turn steers with its rear wheels, so traction and weight matter on a slope more than on a tractor. None of the three listings states a slope rating, so read the owner’s manual and stay within its limit. Our Slope Calculator converts a rise over a run into degrees and percent so you can compare your hill with the manual.

Gas vs battery runtime

The EGO ZT4214L is rated for up to 1.5 acres per charge with six 6.0Ah batteries, so two acres means a mid-session recharge or spare batteries. The listing says the batteries also fit other EGO tools. A gas model has no runtime ceiling: the Z242F has a 3.5 gallon tank, per the listing, and the Z254F listing does not state a tank size.

Seat and comfort

An hour of mowing on a 2 acre lot makes the seat matter. The Z254F listing mentions a comfortable seat, an ergonomic control panel and an anti-slip foot area. The EGO listing mentions a deck suspension system that it says gives a quiet cut. The Z242F listing does not describe the seat, so look at photos and the manual.

Zero-turn safety

Zero-turns steer and brake through the rear wheels, so they can lose traction on slopes, wet grass and near ponds, ditches and drop-offs. Stay within the slope rating in your manual, keep well back from water and edges, use the ROPS and seat belt, never carry passengers, keep children and pets out of the yard, and disengage the blades before reversing. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC riding lawnmower safety. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

The Acre Score explained

The Acre Score weighs five factors: performance (deck width, speed and rated coverage), build quality (deck and drive system), value (specs for the money), safety (published slope rating and operator controls) and warranty (years and coverage). A factor the listing does not state scores zero, which is why none of these three earns safety points.

Product Acre Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
EGO Power+ Z6 ZT4214L 9.6 33 22 19 0 4
Husqvarna Z242F 9.5 30 21 20 0 3
Husqvarna Z254F 9.5 33 20 20 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

FAQ: mowing large lots

What size zero-turn for 2 acres?

A 42 to 54 inch deck covers most 2 acre lots. Smaller decks fit gates and tight beds better; wider decks cut the time. At 6 mph on open ground by our calculator’s formula, a 42 in deck takes about 65 minutes and a 54 in deck about 51 minutes.

How long to mow 2 acres with a zero-turn?

About 50 to 65 minutes on open ground with a 42 to 54 in deck at 6 mph. Add about 20% for some trees and beds and about 45% for many obstacles.

Is a 42 inch zero-turn big enough for 2 acres?

Yes, if the lawn is open and you do not mind about an hour on the mower. A 42 in deck is also easier through gates and between beds. Go wider if time is the priority.

Can a zero-turn mow hills?

Only within the slope rating in the owner’s manual, and none of the three listings here states one. Zero-turns steer with the rear wheels and can lose traction on slopes, so a lawn tractor is often the steadier choice on hills. See our Mower Matcher for a terrain-based shortlist.

Is a battery zero-turn practical for 2 acres?

The EGO ZT4214L is rated up to 1.5 acres per charge, so a full 2 acres means a spare battery set or a recharge partway. Rated runtime depends on grass height and terrain.
