For each one we list the rated runtime, deck, power and warranty from the listing, and say plainly what the listing does not state.

Buying guide: choosing a rider for 1 acre
How big a deck for one acre
One acre is 43,560 square feet. Using the same formula as our Mowing Time Calculator (10% overlap, 80% field efficiency, open lawn), a 42 in deck at 5 mph mows about 1.5 acres an hour, roughly 39 minutes for one acre. A 48 in deck at the same speed does about 1.75 acres an hour, roughly 34 minutes. Trees and beds add time: the calculator applies a 1.2x factor for some obstacles and 1.45x for many. At one acre, a 42 in deck is enough; the extra width on a 48 in deck matters more as you approach two acres.
Lawn tractor, zero-turn or battery rider
All four picks here steer with a wheel, so they behave like lawn tractors, not zero-turns. A tractor is usually the steadier choice on gentle slopes and can tow a cart. A zero-turn is faster around trees and beds on flat ground (see best zero-turn mowers for 2 acres). A battery rider is quieter and has no engine to service, but its rated acres per charge sets the limit. The three battery models here are rated 1.2 to 1.5+ acres per charge, so a full acre leaves little margin.
Transmission
Only the Husqvarna listing describes its transmission, as pedal-operated. The other three listings do not name a transmission type, so look at the manual or the manufacturer page before you buy. A pedal-operated drive leaves your hands free for steering.
Gate width and storage
Measure your narrowest gate and compare it with the deck width, then check the machine’s overall width in the manual, because the listings here give deck size, not overall width. Gas and battery riders both need covered storage; battery packs should be kept out of freezing and extreme heat per the maker’s instructions.
Bagging and mulching
None of the four listings states a bagger or mulch kit. Confirm what the manufacturer offers for your model before you count on either.
Battery runtime vs one acre
The listings rate the EGO at 1.5 acres per charge, the Greenworks at 1.5+ acres depending on conditions and the GIYI at up to 1.2 acres. These are manufacturer ratings under their own conditions. Thick grass, low cutting heights, slopes and mulching all use more power, so plan for a spare battery set or a mid-session recharge if your acre is not flat.
Lawn size, deck width and speed in; minutes per mow out. Or work backward from the time you want to spend.
Never mow a slope steeper than the maximum your manual lists, and mow up and down slopes rather than across. Use the ROPS and seat belt where the machine has them (follow the manual on when a folding ROPS may be lowered), never carry passengers, keep children and pets out of the yard while you mow, and disengage the blades before reversing. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC riding lawnmower safety. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
The Acre Score explained
The Acre Score weighs five factors: performance (mowing speed and coverage), build quality (deck and transmission durability), value (price versus specs), safety (slope rating and operator controls), and warranty (years and coverage).
| Product | Acre Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna TS 140X | 9.5 | 33 | 19 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| EGO Power+ TR4204 | 9.5 | 35 | 22 | 25 | 0 | 4 |
| Greenworks 80V CrossoverT | 9.5 | 33 | 21 | 22 | 0 | 3 |
| GIYI 40V Riding Tractor | 9.5 | 29 | 19 | 25 | 3 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
FAQ: mowing large lots
What size riding mower do I need for 1 acre?
A 42 to 48 in deck is the usual range. On open ground a 42 in deck at 5 mph mows an acre in about 40 minutes by our calculator’s formula, and a 48 in deck in about 35 minutes.
Is a riding mower worth it for 1 acre?
It saves a lot of walking time compared with a push mower, and the answer depends on what you pay now for mowing. Enter your own service quotes in the cost calculator to see the break-even.
How long does it take to mow 1 acre with a riding mower?
About 30 to 40 minutes of mowing on open, flat ground with a 42 to 48 in deck at 5 to 6 mph. Add roughly 20% for some trees and beds and about 45% for many obstacles.
Can a battery riding mower handle a full acre?
The three battery models here are rated for 1.2 to 1.5+ acres per charge, so a flat acre is within the rating but with little margin. Hills, tall grass and mulching reduce runtime, so keep a spare battery set in mind.
Zero-turn or lawn tractor for 1 acre with trees?
A zero-turn turns tighter around trees on flat ground. A tractor with a steering wheel is usually steadier on slopes and can pull attachments. Our full zero-turn vs lawn tractor comparison is listed under Related guides below.
