Buying guide: choosing the best lidar robotic mower

How LiDAR mapping works

LiDAR mowers spin a laser scanner to map the yard, so there is no perimeter wire to bury. The Mammotion lists 360-degree LiDAR with NetRTK and AI vision, the MOVA lists 360-degree 3D LiDAR with AI vision, and the ECOVACS and roborock picks list dual LiDAR with 2 cm positioning. The Mammotion also lists a 59-degree vertical LiDAR with a 230 ft range for mapping. A wire-free map means you redraw zones in the app instead of moving wire.

Coverage and cutting width

Coverage tops out at 3/4 acre on the ECOVACS A3000, then 0.49 acre on the roborock, 1/4 acre on the MOVA and the ECOVACS O1000, while the Mammotion does not state an acreage rating. Cutting widths run from 8 in on the MOVA to 15.7 in on the Mammotion. If your lawn is close to the limit, read do robotic mowers work on large lawns before sizing up.

Slopes and obstacles

The Mammotion and the roborock list 80% slope ratings, the A3000 lists 50% and the MOVA lists 45%; the O1000 does not state one. Obstacle counts are 300+ types on the Mammotion and the MOVA and 200+ on the two ECOVACS picks, with crossing heights of 50 mm, 1.6 in and 3.15 in respectively. Never exceed the maker max slope, and keep children and pets out of the yard while it mows.

Battery and runtime

The Mammotion lists 175 minutes per charge on a 12Ah battery, the roborock lists 110 minutes, the MOVA lists 60 minutes, and the two ECOVACS picks do not state runtime. The A3000 lists a 32V battery and a 400 m2/h rate; the Mammotion lists 5400 sq.ft./h and 500 m2/h. Match the runtime to your acreage so it finishes on one charge.

Security, warranty and connectivity

The MOVA is the only pick with a stated warranty term, 3 years, and it adds anti-theft with real-time tracking and instant alerts. The roborock adds PIN and GPS anti-theft tracking and 3 years of 4G, but that 3-year figure is connectivity, not a warranty. The other three picks state no warranty term.

Cutting heights and edges

Heights run 1.0 to 2.7 in on the Mammotion, 1.2 to 3.9 in on the MOVA, 1.57 to 3.54 in on the roborock and 1.2 to 3.6 in on the ECOVACS picks. The O1000 adds a TruEdge trimmer for borders and the MOVA claims under 2 in edge following, useful where the mower meets beds and walks.

Robotic mower safety

Keep children and pets off the lawn while the mower runs, schedule mowing for times the yard is empty, and use the lift and tilt sensors and PIN lock. Pick up toys, hoses and fallen branches, and stop the mower before you work on it. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Matching It to Your Property

  • Sloped ground: the Mammotion and the roborock state 80% slope ratings, the strongest stated here.
  • Obstacle-filled yards: the Mammotion and the MOVA list 300+ recognized obstacle types.
  • Borders and beds: the ECOVACS O1000 lists a TruEdge trimmer, and the MOVA lists under 2 in edge following.
  • Storage: the MOVA lists 30 lbs, the roborock 50 lbs; the others do not state weight.
  • Long mowing windows: the Mammotion lists 175 minutes per charge.

The Acre Score explained

The Acre Score weighs performance (LiDAR navigation, coverage, cutting width), build (motors, deck, weight where stated), value (features for the class), safety (stated slope rating, PIN or anti-theft features) and warranty (years and coverage). A factor the listing does not state scores zero. Only the MOVA lists a warranty term, 3 years. The tables and product cards show each total.

Product Acre Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
MOVA LiDAX Ultra 1000 9.6 28 20 20 5 3
roborock RockMow X120H 9.6 30 21 21 7 0
Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 9.6 32 22 21 3 0
ECOVACS Goat A3000 9.5 29 21 20 3 0
ECOVACS Goat O1000 9.4 28 20 20 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

FAQ: mowing large lots

Do LiDAR robotic mowers need a boundary wire?

No. The five here all map with LiDAR and set zones in the app; the Mammotion adds NetRTK and AI vision.

What slope can a LiDAR robotic mower handle?

Two picks state 80%, one states 50%, one states 45%, and one states none. Never exceed the maker max slope rating.

Which LiDAR mower covers the most ground?

The ECOVACS A3000 is rated for lawns up to 3/4 acre, the largest rating here.

Do any of these state a warranty?

Only the MOVA, a 3-year manufacturer warranty. The roborock 3-year figure is 4G connectivity, not a warranty term.
