On acreage a pressure washer earns its keep on mud-caked mowers, trailers, tractors, decks and concrete pads. These three gas models run 3,800 to 4,400 PSI at 2.5 to 4.0 GPM. We give the engine, pump, hose, certifications and warranty from each listing and mark what it does not state. We left out one Simpson model whose listing contradicts itself on pressure and engine.

Buying guide: choosing a gas pressure washer for acreage

PSI and GPM together

PSI is force and GPM is flow, and multiplying them gives a rough cleaning-power figure called cleaning units. By the listing numbers, the PowerSmart is 3800 x 2.5 = 9,500, the Homdox 4200 x 4.0 = 16,800 and the Simpson PS60843 4400 x 4.0 = 17,600. More flow rinses mud faster on big equipment.

Axial cam vs triplex pump

The PowerSmart listing gives an axial cam pump and the Homdox listing does not state a pump type. The Simpson listing gives an AAA industrial triplex plunger pump with thermal relief. Triplex pumps are generally built for heavier duty, but the listings do not state pump life for any of the three.

Engine and fuel

The PowerSmart uses a 212cc 4-stroke OHV engine, the Homdox a 209cc 4-stroke engine rated 7.0 gross HP, and the Simpson a CRX 420cc engine. The PowerSmart listing says its engine is EPA certified. The Simpson listings state they are 49-state compliant and are not shipped to California.

Hose length and reach

Stated hose lengths are 25 ft (Homdox), 35 ft in the listing text (PowerSmart, though the specs table says 35 inches) and 50 ft (Simpson). On a farm, a longer hose saves moving the machine.

Wheels and weight

The PowerSmart rolls on 10 in pneumatic tires at 61 lb, and the Homdox listing gives large rubber wheels and no weight. The Simpson has 13 in pneumatic tires, and its specs table gives 61.23 kg (about 135 lb), so plan on a ramp or a second person to load it.

Safety listings

Only the PowerSmart listing states certifications: PWMA performance certified, UL 1776 and an EPA engine certification. A pressure washer can cut skin and a high-pressure jet should never point at people or animals. Read the manual before the first use. See our Safety Disclaimer.

Pressure washer safety

Never point the spray at people, animals or yourself: the stream can cut skin. Run gas pressure washers outdoors only, far from doors, windows and vents, because engine exhaust carries carbon monoxide. Start with the widest nozzle and keep electric units on a GFCI outlet. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC carbon monoxide guidance. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

The Acre Score explained

The Acre Score weighs five factors: performance (PSI, GPM and engine), build quality (pump, frame, wheels, hose), value (specs for the money), safety (UL, ETL or CSA listing, thermal relief and other stated protections) and warranty (years and coverage). A factor the listing does not state scores zero.

Product Acre Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
Simpson PS60843 9.6 34 22 18 3 0
PowerSmart DL1038A 9.6 30 20 20 7 0
Homdox 4200 PSI 9.5 33 19 20 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

FAQ: mowing large lots

What PSI do I need for farm equipment?

All three picks here are 3,800 PSI or more, which is plenty for mud on equipment. The extra flow of a 4.0 GPM model rinses faster. Higher pressure can damage paint, decals and soft wood, so start with a wide nozzle and keep a distance.

Is GPM or PSI more important?

Both matter. PSI loosens dirt and GPM carries it away. For large surfaces and equipment, flow often decides how fast the job goes.

Can a gas pressure washer run on any gasoline?

Follow the owner’s manual for fuel and oil.
