Buying guide: choosing an electric riding mower
Rated acres per charge vs your lawn
Every figure here is the maker’s rating under its own conditions. Thick grass, low cutting heights, slopes and mulching all use more battery. The Mowing Time Calculator formula (acres per hour = mph x 5280 x deck in feet x 0.9 x 0.8 / 43560) shows how long a battery set has to last: at 6 mph a 42 in deck mows 2 acres in about 65 minutes, a 52 in deck mows 3 acres in about 79 minutes and a 54 in deck mows 3.5 acres in about 89 minutes.
Battery voltage, amp-hours and battery count
The three EGO models use the EGO 56V platform: six 12.0Ah batteries on the ZT5207L, six 10.0Ah on the ZT5216L and four 10.0Ah on the ZT4204L. The Greenworks MaximusZ is a 60V system with two 20.0Ah and four 8.0Ah batteries. Capacity, not voltage, sets how long you mow, so compare the amp-hours and count rather than the volts alone.
Charging time and where to charge
Only the ZT4204L listing gives a recharge time, about two hours for four 10.0Ah batteries on the included Z6 wall charger. The Greenworks listing gives a 1500W wall charger and no time. Plan a spot near an outlet in a dry garage, and see the maker’s instructions for battery storage in heat or cold.
Deck width and build
The ZT4204L listing states a 42 in stamped steel deck and the MaximusZ a 10-gauge fabricated steel 54 in deck with 4-in-1 mulching, bagging, rear and side discharge. The ZT5216L and ZT5207L listings give a 52 in cutting width and ten cutting heights from 1.5 to 4.5 in but no deck build.
Slopes and battery riders
Battery riders are heavy: the MaximusZ listing gives 1091 lb and the EGO models 527 to 685 lb. No listing here states a slope rating, so read the owner’s manual and stay within it. Use the Slope Calculator to convert your hill into degrees and percent.
Maintenance compared with gas
The Greenworks listing says its brushless motor system has fewer moving parts than gas and needs no tune-ups or fluids. Blades, tires and the deck still need regular care on any mower.
Lawn size, deck width and speed in; minutes per mow out. Or work backward from the time you want to spend.
Zero-turns steer and brake through the rear wheels, so they can lose traction on slopes, wet grass and near ponds, ditches and drop-offs. Stay within the slope rating in your manual, keep well back from water and edges, use the ROPS and seat belt, never carry passengers, keep children and pets out of the yard, and disengage the blades before reversing. Refuel only with the engine off and cool. See CPSC riding lawnmower safety. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
The Acre Score explained
The Acre Score weighs five factors: performance (deck width, speed and rated acres per charge), build quality (deck and frame), value (specs for the money), safety (published slope rating and operator controls) and warranty (years and coverage). A factor the listing does not state scores zero, so none of these four earns safety points.
| Product | Acre Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EGO Power+ Z6 ZT5216L | 9.6 | 34 | 22 | 20 | 0 | 4 |
| Greenworks 60V MaximusZ | 9.6 | 34 | 24 | 19 | 0 | 3 |
| EGO Power+ ZT5207L | 9.5 | 33 | 19 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
| EGO Power+ ZT4204L | 9.5 | 30 | 20 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
FAQ: mowing large lots
How many acres can an electric riding mower cut on one charge?
The listings here rate 2 acres (ZT4204L), 3 acres (ZT5216L), 3.5 acres (MaximusZ) and 4 acres (ZT5207L) on the included batteries. Real runtime depends on grass, height of cut and terrain.
Are electric riding mowers worth it?
They remove fuel, oil and engine tune-ups and run quieter, and they cost more up front than gas models. Enter your own numbers in the cost calculator to compare.
How long do the batteries last?
The EGO Z6 listing (ZT5216L) states a battery warranty of up to 5 years with registration within 90 days of purchase; the ZT5207L and ZT4204L listings do not state one. None of the listings gives a cycle life or years of service.
Can an electric riding mower tow a cart?
The Greenworks MaximusZ listing states a 300 lb towing capacity with front and rear hitch capability. The EGO listings here do not state towing capacity.
